Narrative on “Charity averts Awful Death”

حدثنا عُقْبَةُ بن مُكْرَمٍ الْعَمِّيُّ الْبَصْرِيُّ حدثنا عبد اللّٰهِ بن عِيسَي الخزاز الْبَصْرِيُّ عن يُونُسَ بن عُبَيْدٍ عن الْحَسَنِ عن أَنَسِ بن مَالِكٍ قال قال رسول اللّٰهِ  صلي اللّٰه عليه وسلم  إِنَّ الصَّدَقَةَ لَتُطْفِئُ غَضَبَ الرَّبِّ وَتَدْفَعُ عن مِيتَةِ السُّوءِ قال أبو عِيسَي هذا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ من هذا الْوَجْهِ

Anas ibn Malik stated that God’s Messenger said: “Indeed, charity pacifies the anger of God and averts awful death.”1

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Īsa ibn Khalid al-Khazzaz is da‘if.2

أبو يعقوب يوسف بن يعقوب بن عبد الوهاب جرجاني حدثنا أحمد بن سعيد الخندقي حدثنا أبو يعقوب يوسف بن محمد بن عبد الوهاب حدثنا أحمد بن يوسف حدثنا إبراهيم بن موسي الفراء حدثنا عيسي بن يونس عن يحيى بن عبيد اللّٰه قال سمعت أبي يحدث عن أبي هريرة عن النبي  صلي اللّٰه عليه وسلم  إن الصدقة تمنع ميتة السوء وبإسناده سواء إن الصدقة لتقع في يد الله قبل أن تقع في يد السائل

Abu Hurayrah stated that God’s Messenger said: “Indeed, charity averts awful death.”3

حدثنا عبد اللّٰهِ حدثني أبي ثنا عبد الرَّزَّاقِ قال أنا مَعْمَرٌ عن عُثْمَانَ بن زُفَرَ عن بَعْضِ بني رَافِعِ بن مُكَيْثٍ عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ مَكِيثٍ5 وكان مِمَّنْ شَهِدَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةَ أَنَّ النبي  صلي اللّٰه عليه وسلم  قال حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ نَمَاءٌ وَسُوءُ الْخُلُقِ شُؤْمٌ وَالْبِرُّ زِيَادَةٌ في الْعُمُرِ وَالصَّدَقَةُ تَمْنَعُ ميته السَّوْءِ

Rafi‘ ibn Makith stated who was among those present in Hudaybiyah reported that the Prophet said: “Good conduct has the ability to grow, evil conduct is bad luck, piety increases a person’s age and charity wards of awful death.”6

The person who narrates from Rafi‘ ibn Makith is unknown.

The variant in which al-Harith ibn Rafi‘ ibn Makith reports from Muhammad (sws) is mursal.7

عبد الرحمن بن يونس قال أخبرنا محمد بن إسماعيل بن أبي فديك قال حدثني محمد بن عثمان عن أبيه أن حارثة بن النعمان فيقول سمعت رسول اللّٰه  صلي اللّٰه عليه وسلم  يقول إن مناولة المسكين تقي ميتة السوء

‘Uthman reports that Harithah ibn al-Nu‘man … said: “I have heard God’s Messenger say: ‘Indeed, giving to the needy averts awful death.’”8

Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman is unidentifiable. Thus no authority states that Muhammad ibn Isma‘il ibn Muslim ibn Abi Fudayk narrates from Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman.9

Perhaps it is because of this that al-Haythami after citing this narrative says that there is narrator in it which he does not know.10
